Down The Memory Lane.

Our Alma – Mater Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya, Nawala, was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of the Western Province, Hon. Mr. Susil Premajayanth, on 14th of February 1996. Mrs. Malini Abeysekera Dissanayake the founder principal was given the responsibility of reawakening the school Diyawanna Vidyalaya under the banner of Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya.

The school is located in the picturesque surrounding of the Diyawanna Valley, bounded by the Diyawanna Oya, in the township of Nawala.

The time of inauguration the school had 13 students & 1 teacher. By the third term of the year of 1996, there were 37 students & 5 teachers. It is interesting to note that by the year 1997, the school has received 410 applications for grade 1 class. It should be stated that the founder principal & the staff were responsible for the progress achieved by the school.

In 1997 a grade 6 class with 6 students commenced in addition to the grade 1 classes. In the same year grade 5 scholarship holders also joined the school. In 1997 the school was upgraded by the Ministry of Education as category 3 school.

The commitment & dedication of Mrs. Malini Abeysekera Dissanayake & the staff built up the academic elevation & the prestige of the school. After 5 years of deliberation the school was able to send 14 students for the G.C.E.O/L & 13 students for the G.C.E.A/L examination in the year 2001. In the year 2002, Advanced Level classes for Commerce & Arts stream were started. In the year 2004, 5 students from the Arts Stream were selected to enter the university. From a primary school the school developed into a secondary school & finally to a leading popular school within a period of 15 years. The progress achieved gradually reached the climax in the year 2008, possessing a staff of 101 teachers & nearly 3000 students. The school was categorized as a 1 AB school.

In addition to the studies, the students under the guidance of the teachers have excelled in the fields of sports & co-curricular activities. Our students have won many All Island Competitions as well as International Competitions. The fact that is noteworthy is that the students have won many swimming competitions, although the school does not possess a swimming pool.

The school has taken many strides within a short span of time to become a very popular Girls School in the District of Colombo. At present the school shelters over 2800 students enjoying educational facilities, guided by the present principal Mrs. Enid Goonewardena, who assumed her duties as the Principal in 2008. Ever since up to date Mrs. E. Gunewardena also has been dedicated herself to serve the school in the sphere of Educational & co-curricular activities & to upgrade infrastructure facilities & resources development & the Principal & the 101 teachers committed to the task of providing knowledge & skills & assisting the pupils in the development of aptitudes & attitudes that are essential in character building & good citizenship.
